Review of Gala Concert on 19 April 2017 in Peking/China

A Festival of Voices

The Gala Concert which took place on 19 April, 2017 in the Tian Qiao Theatre to celebrate the 60th birthday of the famous baritone and opera director Keqing Liu was a highlight in the cultural life of Peking.

Not only was it a festival of voices but also a festival of the orchestra and the choir which achieved a most brilliant performance under the baton of their principal conductor Helge Dorsch.

The highlight of the evening were excerpts from Puccini's masterpiece "Turandot" which will be performed in its entirety by the Laiyin Opera (New Opera of Peking) on 10 October, 2017 in the same theatre with Chunqing Zhang starring in the title role and Helge Dorsch conducting.

Maestro Dorsch not only emphasized the dramatic climaxes in a grandiose and most effective way but also worked ouit the subtleties of the complicated score with great sensitivity.

Through his masterful conducting he had full control over the orchestra, the 120 choir members and the soloists.

Excerpts from other operas were convincingly performed as well. Dilber Yunus excelled in Adele's Aria from "The Bat", spiritedly accompanied by Helge Dorsch

We are looking forward to the premiere of "Turandot".
